ANAMBRA 2021: CHIEF DR. GEORGE MOGHALU IS DETERMINED TO CONDUCT LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS IF ELECTED AS GOVERNOR
By Johnson Okoye
level of under-development in the councils as a result of non-conduct of elections by APGA led administration, only Chief Dr. George Moghalu can rescue the state
Local government in Nigeria is an agent of transformation in nation building and it is
purposefully created by law or constitution for local communities by which they manage their
local public affairs within the limits of the law .
It is not new that Anambra State Government under APGA has find it difficult to conduct local government elections for the past 15years.
The development and deepening of democracy had been stalled at the grassroots level of the state by the refusal of the governor to conduct elections into the councils.
Mr. Peter Obi as we all know struggled to conduct one because there was public outcry over it and he never did it until he was set to leave office and i think that is the pattern being followed by Obiano.
In Anambra state, APGA has continued to treat local government activities as an extension of their private concerns, handpicking and determining who runs them and their mode of operations.
This system has become their platform for settlement of self-acclaimed political godfathers, who gather to handpick those that should serve as either elected or appointed council chairmen to the detriment of the people and this is aimed at siphoning the revenues and allocations that accrues to the local councils thereby under-developing the councils and resources frittered away.
Statistics obtained from the Federal Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) indicates that from May 1999 to June 2017, local governments in the Southeast zone have received over N1.8 trillion in monthly allocations. The amount is different from the internally generated revenues from the various councils. Yet, regularly conducting elections to enable the people choose their representatives have eluded the councils
Our question now what are APGA led government doing with those funds allocated to local councils?
Ndi Anambra it is time to end APGA government that has wasted our resources without any commensurate tangible developments on ground or savings anywhere.
Certainly, the time has come for the people to say bye to bad riddance and support Chief Dr. George Moghalu to enthrone good governance and take the dividend of democracy down to grassroot.
